Academic High School Program
A program of studies designed to prepare students for continued study at a college or university.
Associate's Degree
A degree granted for the successful completion of a sub-baccalaureate program of studies, usually requiring at least 2 years (or equivalent) of full-time college-level study. This includes degrees granted in a cooperative or work-study program.
Bachelor's Degree
A degree granted for the successful completion of a baccalaureate program of studies, usually requiring at least 4 years (or equivalent) of full-time college-level study. This includes degrees granted in a coorperative or work-study program.
D. Eng. or D.E.S.
An earned degree carrying the title of Doctor of Engineering or Doctor of Engineering Science. The D. Eng and D.E.S. are awarded for fulfilling specialized requirements in the fields of engineering and engineering science. Many doctor's degrees in academic and professional fields require an earned master's degree as a prerequisite.
D.B.A.
An earned degree carrying the title of Doctor of Business Administration. The D.B.A. is awarded for fulfilling specialized requirements in the field of business administration. Many doctor's degrees in academic and professional fields require an earned master's degree as a prerequisite.
D.C. or D.C.M.
An earned degree carrying the title of Doctor of Chiropractic Medicine. The D.C. and D.C.M. are usually based on a program requiring at least 2 academic years of work prior to entrance and a total of at least 6 academic years of work to complete the degree program, including both prior-required college work and the professional program itself.
D.D.S. or D.M.D.
An earned degree carrying the title of Doctor of Dental Surgery or Doctor of Dental Medicine. The D.D.S. and D.M.D. are usually based on a program requiring at least 2 academic years of work prior to entrance and a total of at least 6 academic years of work to complete the degree program, including both prior-required college work and the professional program itself.
D.M.A.
An earned degree carrying the title of Doctor of Musical Arts. The D.M.A. is awarded for fulfilling specialized requirements in the field of musical arts. Many doctor's degrees in academic and professional fields require an earned master's degree as a prerequisite.
D.O.
An earned degree carrying the title of Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine. The D.O. is usually based on a program requiring at least 2 academic years of work prior to entrance and a total of at least 6 academic years of work to complete the degree program, including both prior-required college work and the professional program itself.
D.P.M.
An earned degree carrying the title of Doctor of Podiatric Medicine. The D.P.M. is usually based on a program requiring at least 2 academic years of work prior to entrance and a total of at least 6 academic years of work to complete the degree program, including both prior-required college work and the professional program itself.
D.V. M.
An earned degree carrying the title of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. The D.V.M. is usually based on a program requiring at least 2 academic years of work prior to entrance and a total of at least 6 academic years of work to complete the degree program, including both prior-required college work and the professional program itself.
Ed. D.
An earned degree carrying the title of Doctor of Education. The Ed. D. is awarded for fulfilling specialized requirements in the field of education. Many doctor's degrees in academic and professional fields require an earned master's degree as a prerequisite.
General High School Program
A program of studies designed to provide students with the understanding and competence to function effectively in a free society and usually represents a mixture of academic and vocational components.

J.D.
An earned degree carrying the title of Doctor of Jurisprudence. The J.D. is usually based on a program requiring at least 2 academic years of work prior to entrance and a total of at least 6 academic years of work to complete the degree program, including both prior-required college work and the professional program itself.
Master's Degree
A degree awarded for successful completion of a program generally requiring 1 or 2 years of full-time college-level study beyond the bachelor's degree.
M.D.
An earned degree carrying the title of Doctor of Medicine. The M.D. is usually based on a program requiring at least 2 academic years of work prior to entrance and a total of at least 6 academic years of work to complete the degree program, including both prior-required college work and the professional program itself.
O.D.
An earned degree carrying the title of Doctor of Optometry. The O.D. is usually based on a program requiring at least 2 academic years of work prior to entrance and a total of at least 6 academic years of work to complete the degree program, including both prior-required college work and the professional program itself.
Pharm. D.
An earned degree carrying the title of Doctor of Pharmacy. The D. Pharm. is usually based on a program requiring at least 2 academic years of work prior to entrance and a total of at least 6 academic years of work to complete the degree program, including both prior-required college work and the professional program itself.
Ph.D.
An earned degree carrying the title of Doctor of Philosophy. The Ph.D. is the highest academic degree and requires mastery within a field of knowledge and demonstrated ability to perform scholarly research. Many doctor's degrees in academic and professional fields require an earned master's degree as a prerequisite.
Psy.D.
An earned degree carrying the title of Doctor of Psychology. The Psy.D. usually requires 5 to 7 years of graduate study and one year of internship.
Technical Certification Program, Post-undergraduate Education
1-2 years of specialized training after an Associate's or Bachelor's degree. Sometimes technical training is given as undergradate course work. Successful completion of this training and examination leads to certification in a specialized area.
Technical Program
Generally 1-2 years of specialized technical training beyond high school. May lead to certification in a specialized area.
Technical Program, High School
Required coursework covered during high school years which may lead to certification.
Vocational High School Program
A program of studies designed to prepare students for employment in one or more semi-skilled, skilled, or technical occupations.
V.M.D.
An earned degree carrying the title of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. The V.M.D. is usually based on a program requiring at least 2 academic years of work prior to entrance and a total of at least 6 academic years of work to complete the degree program, including both prior-required college work and the professional program itself.
